Pin hole surgery (Device closure of hole in the Heart)
Many simple heart defects like ASD, PDA, VSD etc can be closed without open heart surgery. The child is given sedation and hence cannot feel any pain. Through a blood vessel in the thigh or neck in a few cases. A catheter is passed into the heart and the hole in the heart is closed with a device. The procedure takes about 1.5 hour to do and the hospital stay is for around 2-3 days. The majority of the children will be able to go to school, play and continue academic activities like all other children. Once the hole is closed, most children start putting on weight, and eat more food and there is a decrease in respiratory infections.
Pin hole surgery (Balloon Plasty)
Some children are born with blocks in one or more valves in the heart eg. Pulmonary stenosis, aortic stenosis, coarctation of aorta etc. Similarly as described above a wire is passed from a blood vessel in the thigh and a balloon is passed over the wire and the block is opened up with the balloon. The balloon is immediately removed and the child can be discharged the next day in most cases. Children undergoing balloon plasty can start playing around in few days after the procedure in most cases.
Pin hole surgery (Stenting)
Certain children are born with narrow blood vessels leading from the heart like coarctation, pulmonary artery stenosis etc. Many such children can be treated by stenting the blood vessels. The method is similar to those described above. Most children can be discharged in a few days and resume normal activities within a week.
This is a permanent treatment and a one-time procedure in the majority of children.
